Protect our democracy:
Joining forces to send a strong signal for respect, diversity and cosmopolitanism
on May 25, 2024

21.05.2024

On Saturday, May 25, 2024, more than 60 scientific and cultural institutions under the umbrella of DRESDEN-concept and the association #WOD – Initiative for an Open City of Dresden invite all Dresdeners to stand together to protect democracy from 1:30 pm at four different locations in the city culminating in an art, culture and science festival. Admission is free. You do not need to register in advance.

A diverse show on stage will combine classical and local music with modern tunes

On stage at the “Altmarkt”, the Dresdner Sinfoniker orchestra will present a musical statement composed especially for this occasion. There will also be contributions by Hamburg musician BOSSE, the Dresden brass ensemble of international musicians from Banda Comunale as well as arias by Semper Opera House soprano Nikola Hillebrand. In addition, the more than 100 singers of the extraordinary Dresden amateur choir project Bürgerchor am Kulti will sing together with the audience. The event will be moderated by MDR presenter Sissy Metzschke and science presenter Simon Hauser.

Various pavilions will invite visitors to exchange ideas and engage in discussions

In pavilions on the “Altmarkt”, interested parties can talk to representatives of art, culture and science. A family area will provide hands-on activities and games for all generations.

“With the event ‘United for democracy – Dresden science and culture calls for action’, we, a powerful coalition of Dresden institutions from science, art and culture, want to send a clear signal of unity to protect our democracy. Recent events in our city have, unfortunately, once again highlighted the urgency of this message. That is why we would like as many people as possible to accept our invitation and stand together with us for values such as respect, diversity, cosmopolitanism and democracy,” says Professor Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TUD Dresden University of Technology.

The event will start from 1:30 pm with groups assembling at four locations. These locations are:

  • Fritz-Foerster-Platz
  • Sachsenplatz
  • Albertplatz
  • Wettiner Platz

From 2:00 pm, the processions will set off towards the city center and meet at “Altmarkt”, where the main program of “United for democracy” will take place from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.

All members of the public are cordially invited to take part and come to this public festival of science and culture for democracy on “Altmarkt”.
