DRESDEN-concept welcomes the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics as new members

The German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) is a large-scale research center currently under development, with sites in Görlitz and the district of Bautzen. It emerged from a nationwide ideas competition aimed at strengthening structurally weaker regions and is jointly funded by the German federal government and the Free State of Saxony.

Its planned research priorities include high-precision measurement techniques, for example for the study of gravitational waves, as well as new approaches to processing and storing large volumes of data generated in astrophysical research. A particular focus lies on the development of a unique research infrastructure, including an underground laboratory that offers ideal conditions for highly sensitive measurements due to the geological characteristics of the Lusatia region.

With its international orientation and strong focus on technology, the DZA makes an important contribution to linking fundamental research, innovation, and regional development.

The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle (Saale) conducts fundamental research in solid-state physics and materials science.

Its research focuses on micro- and nanostructures and their physical properties. Particular emphasis is placed on layer systems at the nano- and micrometer scale, interfaces, and nanostructured materials, with the aim of developing novel functional materials for applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics, and sensor technology.

The institute is equipped with state-of-the-art research infrastructure, including cleanrooms and specialized laboratories, and is strongly integrated into international research networks. Its work contributes significantly to key future fields such as information technology, energy, and advanced material systems.

As one of the first Max Planck Institutes established in the new federal states after German reunification, it also stands as a prime example of the successful development of non-university research in eastern Germany.
