Health Insurance

Comprehensive health insurance cover is mandatory for anyone living in Germany. Therefore, a valid health insurance for you and each family member for the whole duration of your stay is required. Those applying for a visa to enter Germany need to show sufficient health insurance coverage when applying for the visa already.

Statutory health insurance (employment contract, includes family members residing in Germany)

Employees are required to register for German public health insurance after arrival. We will help you to sign up for it after you have arrived in Dresden. Your children/spouse will be insured in the “family plan” of your insurance. The insurance starts on the first day of your employment (validity of employment contract).

For the visa application, a short period of travel health insurance might be needed. A slight overlap with the public health insurance is recommended. The embassy is likely to have information on accepted health insurances on their website. If you are unable to find anything, please let us know and we will assist you.

Private health insurance (scholarship holders/own funding)

If you will have a scholarship/own funding, you will need private health insurance. Please sign a contract with the travel health insurance you need for the visa. The Immigration Office in Dresden only accepts German private health insurance. Therefore, you need a German insurance plan if you want to extend your visa (= residence permit) in Dresden. We will support you with setting it up once you have arrived.

Private health insurance needs to be procured for each person separately and the tariffs do not depend on income, but are linked to age, state of health and the desired insurance cover. Depending on the tariff, private health insurance policies don’t or only partly cover chronic diseases, known illnesses, dental prostheses, check-ups, or pregnancies.
