Childcare and Schooling

Matthias Hultsch

General information

To apply for a place in a daycare, a childminder or to register your child/ren for a public school, your child/ren’s local registration is required first. That means an application can only be made after their arrival. Nonetheless, you should make yourself familiar with the local childcare and school system in advance.

Within this page you get a brief overview of the different childcare and schooling options available by age group (relevant for Saxony). For detailed information about the various types of childcare and schooling, as well as application and registration procedures, please consult our Welcome Guide and do not hesitate to contact us with a specific question.

Childcare is not generally available under the age of 12 months, nor are children under 12 months entitled to a place in childcare. Only very few childminders/nannies already accept children from the age of 10 or 11 months. Please contact us as early as possible and in advance of your stay, should you be in need of childcare for a child under one.
Alternatively, consider asking a relative or friend to help until the child has reached the age of 12 months and is generally eligible for various forms of daycare.

…are entitled to a place in crèche – Krippe or accepted by childminder/nannies- Kindertagespflege/Tageseltern/Tagesmutter/Tagesvater. Places are allocated upon application for your preferred crèches/child minders to the City of Dresden.

Please anticipate longer waiting periods.

…can attend kindergarten – Kindergarten or be minded by a childminder/nanny – Kindertagespflege/Tageseltern/Tagesmutter/Tagesvater. Often, crèche and kindergarten are located in the same building to facilitate the transition and childcare for siblings.
There is no separate institutionalized preschool – Vorschule.

Children start elementary school – Grundschule at the age of 6 or 7, depending on their precise date of birth and maturity. Elementary school runs from grade 1 to grade 4. In the last year of elementary school each child receives an official recommendation to continue on with either Mittelschule, subdivided into Hauptschule and Realschule or Gymnasium.

Full-time schooling is mandatory for 9 years. After completing the elementary school, children continue their mandatory schooling at:

  • the Mittelschule, subdivided into:
    • Hauptschule from grades 5 to 9, leading to a lower level of the secondary education certificate; and Realschule from grades 5 to 10, leading to a secondary school certificate
  • the Gymnasium, from grades 5 to 12, leading to the A levels – Abitur.

After Realschule, some children get the possibility to continue their schooling by either changing to a Gymnasium, which leads to the A levels or by visiting a Fachoberschule or a Berufliches Gymnasium, which are specialized or vocational oriented.

Alternatively or afterwards (or after Gymnasium) they may start a vocational training, depending on their interests and abilities.
One can chose between:

  • a duale Berufsausbildung, which is consisting of one part schooling and one part hands-on training in a company
  • a schulische Berufsausbildung, which comprises a solely vocational schooling

Anyone with A levels – Abitur (graduation from a Gymnasium) may start studing at a university.

For Fachoberschule graduates it depends on their type of graduation, whether they have access to:

  • courses with majors in their specialisation only or
  • to Universities of Applied Sciences – Fachhochschule only or
  • all Universities.
